Tyre - Lebanon

On our first day at Lebanon our initial target was to go to the Beiddettin Palace on the Chouf mountains. However snow didnt let us this palace of Druzes. So we headed to the city of Tyre, 80 km south of Beirut. Tyre is an ancient Phenician city and considered as the legendary birthplace of Europa.

According to Herodotus, city was founded around 2750 BC and the Tyrian merchants were the first to navigate in the Mediterranean and established trading colonies.It has always been a rich city. We have visited the Al Bass site to see the beautiful Roman ruins.

Lübnan'daki ilk günümüzde, ilk hedefimiz Chouf dağlarındaki Dürzi sarayı Beiddettin'i ziyaret etmekti ancak kar yüzünden yollar kapalı olunca, Beyrut'un 80 km güneyinde yer alan Sur kentine gittik. Sur, mitolojide Avrupa'nın doğduğu yer kabul edilen eski bir Fenike şehri.


Heradot'a göre şehir MÖ 2750 kurulmuş ve Sur'lu tüccarlar tarihte Akdeniz'e ilk açılıp ticaret kolonileri kurmakla ünlenmişler. Aşağıdaki fotoğraflar Al Bass alanındaki eski Roma şehrinden..  

One of the most interesting thing for us here was to see the remains of the old Hijaz railway built during the Ottoman time..It was passing right thru the antic city..

Burada bizim için ilginç olan bir şey de eski Hicaz demiryolunun bir kısmını görmekti. Antik şehri tam ortasından yarıp geçiyordu. 

Then we wandered in the streets of Tyre.

It was interesting to see the pirate DVDs of famous Turkish soap operas..

Then we went to the fishing harbour located in the Christian section of the town to eat at the restaurant Le Phenician which Lonely Planet suggested highly. They were right, best food we tasted in Lebanon. I still dream about their delicious fish carpaccio.

Daha sonra öğle yemeği için şehrin Hristiyan kesimindeki balıkçı limanında bulunan ve Lonely Planet'ın tavsiye ettiği Le Phenician restaurant'a gittik. Lonely Planet haklıymış, Lübnan'da yediğimiz en iyi yemeği orada yedik.Enfes balık karpaçyolarının tadı damağımda kaldı..

Nowadays beautiful spring weather, sunshine, blooming flowers, blue Mediterranean are my driving forces to take tons of photos. Unfortunately I am not able to put most of them here,to the blog.. Why dont you join me in facebook to take a look to the pages of my Turquoise Diaries..

Spring (finally!!)

After a long and cold winter, spring is finally here with its full strength and beauty. Flowers everywhere and sunshine on my skin...I miss being outdoors...

Uzun ve soğuk bir kıştan sonra, ilkbahar tüm güzelliği ile nihayet geldi. Her yerde çiçekler ve tenimde güneş ışığı. Dışarılarda olmayı özlemişim...

Hera's Garden...

Well, we are finally back to Datca, and I cant wait to show you these photos...

Sonunda, Datça'mıza geri döndük ve aşağıdaki fotoğrafları size göstermek için sabırsızlanıyorum..

We named this place as ''Hera's Garden'' and we are the recent proud owners of this small piece of land where we are planning to build our DREAM home.. It's located on the Aegean side of our peninsula and there are more than 25 olive trees on it and next season you are welcomed to taste the first olive oil of Hera's Garden...Our Hera has not see the garden named after her yet, but I am sure we will all be very happy here...

Bu yerin yeni mutlu sahipleri bizler adını ''Hera'nın Bahçesi'' koyduk ve önümüzdeki yıllarda burada hayalimizdeki evi inşa etmeyi planlıyoruz. Yarımadanın Ege kısmında yer alan bu bahçede 25'den fazla zeytin ağacı var ve önümüzdeki sezon Hera'nın Bahçesi'nden ilk zeytinyağları tatmaya başlayabilirsiniz..Bizim Hera henüz daha kendi adı verilen bahçeyi görmedi ama eminim hepimiz burada çok mutlu olacağız.. 

Construction will probably start in 2 years time and in the mean time we have lots of time to dream and plant all sorts of fruit trees..

İnşaat tahminen 2 yıl içinde başlayacak ve bu da bize hayal kurmak ve her türlü meyve ağacından bahçeye ekmek için bol bol zaman verecek..

Not Pride and Prejudice, This is Snow and Prejudice

Some of you may already know that, once I was an exchange student  at Keyser West Virginia/ USA, and I had graduated from high school,there.

 Anyway, during my stay, my friends were so excited for me, when the first snow of the winter hit WV, thinking that I was seeing the snow fort he first time in my life. With much limited information sources of the day, they were probably relating Turkey with infinite deserts, camels and a blazing sun. Well, the truth was the total opposite. We used to live under the snow for 3-4 months every winter at my home town. A BIG, BIG prejudice…

Sanırım bazılarınız benim lise son sınıfı Amerika’da değişim öğrencisi olarak okuduğumu biliyorsunuzdur.

Her neyse, orada ilk kar yağdığında, hayatımda ilk kez kar gördüğümü zanneden arkadaşlarım benim için çok heyecanlanmışlardı. Sanırım Türkiye imgelerinin çoğunu çöller, develer ve sürekli parlayan bir güneş oluşturuyordu. Halbuki gerçek bunun tam tersiydi.. O yıllarda Eskişehir yılın 3-4 ayını kar ve buz altında geçirirdi. Çok çok BÜYÜK bir önyargı.

But I faced with a much BIGGER one of mine last week during our trip to Lebanon. Here we are, two experienced traveller who had done all their homework before the trip but somehow never imagined not  to see the famous Baalbek temples because of the snow..We have tried 3 consequtive days to reach there but the Damascus highway was closed due to heavy snow. Well most guide books  tell you that you can ski in the morning and swim in the afternoon in Lebanon  but unable to travel on the high way to Syria due to heavy snow was still beyond my imagination.

Fakat geçen hafta Lübnan gezimiz sırasında kendime ait çok çok DAHA BÜYÜK bir önyargı ile yüzleştim. Evet, biz iki deneyimli gezgin, seyahat öncesinde tüm ev ödevlerimizi yapmamıza rağmen, ünlü Baalbek tapınaklarına kar yüzünden gidemedik.. 3 gün üst üste denememize rağmen araçların Şam otoyoluna çıkışına izin verilmiyordu. Tamam, Lübnan’da sabahtan kayak yapıp, öğleden sonra denize girebileceğiniz tüm tanıtım yazılarında belirtiliyordu ama Suriye yolunun yoğun kar nedeni ile kapalı olması hayal edilie bir şey değildi.

So for now you have to settle with some lousy snowy pics from Lebanon instead of the magnificent Baalbek ruins and the Bekaa Valley. But now I KNOW that it could snow heavily and close the roads in Middle East during March.

As we couldnt go inlands, we visited every inch of the coast line of the country and more posts are coming about them.

Sonuçta Baalbek antik kentinden ve Bekaa Vadisinden muhteşem görüntüler yerine bu post’da vasat kar resimleri ile idare edeceksiniz. Ve evet, şimdi öğrendik ki, Orta Doğu’da kar yüzünden Mart ayında yollar kapanabilirmiş…

İç bölgelere ulaşamadığımızdan, ülkenin sahil şeridini karış karış gezme şansımız oldu. Hepsi yakında, burada….

Time to leave again...

I think the worst thing about moving between two houses is to clean the refrigirator every time you leave.Deep freezed item could survive much longer but the refrigirated ones have to go.  So for the last couple days I am chopping and mixing everything in the freeze to clean and feed us. Sometimes good surprıses happen. I started this dish as a couscous salad but ended up with a delicious couscous with vegies..

Galiba iki ev arasında gidip gelmenin en kötü tarafı her seferinde buzdolabını boşaltmak zorunda olmam. Derin dondurucudakiler daha uzun süre dayanabiliyor ama buzdolabı mutlaka temizlenmeli. Son bir kaç gündür buzdolabında ne var ne yok birbirine karıştırıp bize bir şeyler pişirmeye çalışıyorum. Bazen de ortaya bunun gibi güzel sürprizler çıkabiliyor. Kuskus salatası olarak başlanıp, yol ortasında çok lezzetli bir sebzeli kuskus yemeğine dönmüştür..

 YES, tomorrow we are heading to İstanbul. It will be a couple of busy weeks for us. There are doctor controls of me and hubby. Then we will go back to my childhood house in Eskişehir along with my mom and my brother to empty the house. I think it will be a very emotional process. It is a lovely house and I have so many memories there, but my mom decided that she could not keep it any longer as she is also living in Datca now.

After clearing the house, hopefully in a couple of days we will fly to Beirut for  a week. Then we have guests from England for another week, and in between all these must have jobs, we have to see friends and family, visit our favorite shops, see couple exhibitions, meet with the bank, accountant and have to find a new tenant.

Evet yarın bir kaç haftalığına İstanbul'a gidiyoruz.Öncelikle doktor kontrollerimiz var,sonra Eskişehir'e gidip çocukluğumun geçtiği evi boşaltmamız lazım. Uzun süre dirensek de sonunda biz de pes ettik. İki katlı bahçeli evimizin yerinde yakında bir apartman uzanacak.Sonrasında bir Beyrut seyahatimiz var, onun sonrasında da İngiltere'den misafirlerimiz...Tüm bu koşuşturmanın arasında, bankalar ve muhasebeci ziyaret edilecek, yeni bir kiracı bulunacak, aile ve arkadaşlarla buluşulup hasret giderilecek, bir kaç sergi ve müze görülecek, özlenen dükkanlardan alışveriş yapılacak vs..

We are hoping to complete all these tasks in 3 weeks and planning to return to Datca in mid March. I dont think that I will have continuous internet connection but I promise to do my best to sent you some scenes from İstanbul and Beirut...

Tüm bu işleri 3 haftada tamamlayıp, Datça'ya dönebilmeyi umuyoruz. Sürekli internet bağlantımın olacağını zannetmiyorum ama söz size İstanbul'dan ve Beyrut'dan bir şeyler yayınlamaya çalışacağım..

Almonds are coming....

This morning,after a very short pee break, Hera definitely refused to go out. She is quite content under her blanket. As you can see from the position of Hera its very cold today. We have lots of rain and even some hail..

Bu sabah çok kısa süren bir tuvalet molasından sonra, Hera kesinlikle dışarı çıkmayı reddetti. Tahmin edebileceğiniz gibi hava burada bugün çok soğuk ve bizimki de battaniyesinin altında çok mutlu. Bol bol yağmur ve arada bir de dolu var..

However yesterday it was a totally different story. We went out to take the photos of almond flowers. Almonds are an important product of our small peninsula as well as honey and olive oil. During February whole peninsula painted to white with blooming almond flowers.. Such a beautiful scenery..

Ancak dün tamamen farklı bir hikayeydi. Çiçek açan badem ağaçlarını fotoğraflamak için dışarılardaydık. Badem, zeytinyağı ve bal bizim küçük yarımadanın önemli ürünleridir ve her Şubat badem çiçekleri her yeri beyaza boyar. Harika bir manzaradır..
