Blue town of Morocco - Chefchaouen

On the way to Tangier from Fes, we stopped at the blue town of Morocco. I was just dying to see this place for such a long time, and at the same time worried that it would not meet my expectations..

Fez'den Tanca'ya gittiğimiz gün yolda Fas'ın mavi şehri Chefchaouen'e uğradık. Burayı o kadar uzun zamandır görmek istiyordum ki, bir taraftan da beklentilerimi karşılamaz diye endişeleniyordum da...

Founded in 1471 by a descendant of a Prophet Mohammed as a stronghold in the fight against the Portuguese Chefchaouen considered as an holy town by the Muslims of Morocco.. However the city earned its reputation with its blue walls thanks to its Jewish heritage.

1471 yılında, Hz. Muhammed'in soyundan gelen biri tarafından Portekizlilerle yaptığı savaşta sığınak olarak inşa edilen şehir, Faslı Müslümanlar tarafından yüzyıllardır kutsal bir şehir olarak kabul ediliyor. Ancak şehre bugünkü ününü getiren mavi duvarları ise Yahudi geçmişine borçlu..

The day started with heavy rain and as we climbed the Rif mountains it intensified but with luck it gave us a 2 hours break when we reached the city. The women from the tribes of the Western Rif mountain were setting their small market at the entrance of the old town. It was a great and colorful scene but very hard to photograph as Moroccan people mostly do not like their photos taken..

Gün sağanak halinde yağan yağmurla başlamıştı ve biz Rif dağlarına tırmandıkça şiddetini arttırarak devam etti. Ancak şansımıza şehre ulaştığımız anda iki saat kadar mola verdi. Eski şehrin girişinde Rif dağlarındaki köylerden gelen kadınlar küçük pazarlarını kurmuşlardı. Öylesine harika ve renkli bir manzaraydı ki. Ancak Fas'lılar genellikle fotoğraflarının çekilmesinden hiç hoşlanmadığı için, fotoğraflanması da bir o kadar zordu..

Then we wandered in the narrow blue streets of the town and took hundreds of photos. Every street, every corner openned a new shade of blue in front of us. It is definitely a paradise for photographers, and did it meet my expectations:YES, YES,YES...

Daha sonra şehrin mavi ve daracık sokaklarında dolanmaya başladık ve yüzlerce fotoğraf çektik. Her sokak, her döndüğümüz köşe, bizi mavinin farklı bir tonunu sunuyordu. Fotoğrafçılar için kesinlikle bir cennet..Peki sonuçta benim beklentilerimi karşıladı mı?? EVET, EVET, EVET..

Fes - Morocco

Well, here we are in my favorite city in Morocco..This is the place where you could find the old and the new side by side in a great harmony and enjoy immensely....This is the place where you could walk all day in the labyrinthine layout of the old city and get lost countless times....This is the place where you could BE in one of the oldest cities in the world.

Evet, bugün Fas'daki en sevdiğim şehir Fes'deyiz. Burası eski ve yeniyi uyum içinde yan yana bulabileceğiniz ve son derece keyif alabileceğiniz bir yer....Burası eski şehrin labirent misali sokaklarında tüm gün dolaşıp, sayısız kez kaybolabileceğiniz bir yer....Burası dünya üzerinde en eski şehirlerden birinde olabileceğiniz bir yer..

We, naturally stayed in the old part of the town in a beautiful old Moroccan house restored and renovated by a British gentelman..Hotel Dar el Menia.. He was a great help as he sent us pages of documents thru e.mail about Fes and about his hotel-home after we made the reservation. Great service that I experienced for the first time.. 

Although there are many historical buildings you could visit in Fes, our preference was just to walk in the streets of the old city in a slow pace, enjoy the everyday life in our surroundings, bought bits and pieces of souveniers and experience the legendary bargaining skills of Moroccan shop owners with lots of mint tea..

Biz tabiki şehrin eski kısmında, İngiliz bir bey tarafından restore edilmiş eski bir Fas evinde kaldık. Hotel Dar el Menia.. Otel rezervasyonumuzu yaptıktan sonra bize e-mail ile otel-evi ve Fes hakkında sayfalarca yazı göndererek çok yardımcı oldu. Şimdiye kadar hiç rastlamadığım çok güzel bir hizmet verdi..

Fes'de ziyaret edebileceğiniz pek çok tarihi bina olsa da bizim tercihimiz, yavaş bir tempoda eski şehrin sokaklarında dolaşarak etrafımızdaki günlük yaşamı gözlemek, ufak tefek Fas el işi ürünler alarak, sayısız nane çayı eşliğinde Fas'lı satıcıların artık efsaneleşmiş pazarlık tekniklerini denemekten yana oldu. Hiç sıkılmadan koca bir gün geçirdik böyle..

One of the most interesting placesin Fes is the old tanneries. These tanneries located in the same place since the middle ages. You could easly understand that you reached the quarter due to the horrible smell but once you climb on top of a building, its an amazing experience to watch the tanning process as in the old days...

Fes'de gidilmesi gereken en ilginç yerlerden biri, tabakhaneler. Bu tabakhaneler orta çağdan beri, şehrin bu bölgesinde çalışmaya devam ediyorlar. Şehirde onlara ait bölgeye geldiğinizi, feci bir kokudan çok rahat anlayabilirsiniz.Ancak yüksekçe bir binanın tepesine çıkıp, yüzyıllardır aynen süren bir çalışmaya tanık olmak kesinlikle harika bir deneyim oluyor..

From Rabat to Fes....

I keep neglecting posting abour our Moroccan trip. It was a trip we enjoyed a lot and came back with fond memories that we will always remember... So I will make a series of posts and share this beautiful country with you...

Fas seyahatimizi blog'da yazmayı ihmal edip duruyorum. Halbuki Fas bizim için gezmekten çok keyif aldığımız ve uzun süre hafızalarımızda yer edecek çok güzel anılarla döndüğümüz bir ülke oldu. Artık tembellik yok, bugünden itibaren bir seri yazı ile sizleri Fas'a götürüyorum..

While we were driving from Rabat to Fes, we made 2 stops on the road. our first stop was at the ancient Roman site of Volubilis. It is possible to see some nice buildings from 1st and 2nd centuries.

Rabat'dan Fez kentine giderken yolda iki önemli yerde durduk. İlki 1. ve 2. yüzyıldan kalma hoş Roma yapıların görülebileceği antik Volubilis kenti..

It is really a small town and very easy to explore.. However if you are coming from Turkey like us, Italy or Greece, this town will not impress you very easily as the citizens of these countries are used to see much larger and impressive Roman and Greek ruins in their own lands.

Dolaşması son derece rahat, ufak bir kent Volubilis. Ancak şunu da eklemeliyim ki, bizim gibi Türkiye'den yada İtalya ve Yunanistan'dan gelenler için çok çarpıcı bir arkeolojik alan değil. Bu üç ülkede de çok daha büyük ve etkileyici Yunan, Roma antik kentleri bulunuyor.

Later we stopped at the town of Moulay Idriss which is very close to Volubilis site..Moulay İdriss founded the first Arab-Muslim dynasty in Morocco. He died in 791 and buried to this town that now bears his name. Today it is an important pilgrimage site for Moroccan Muslims and non-Muslims are not allowed to enter his tomb. Being a Muslim it was no problem for me after covering my hair with a scarf..As hubby do not like no shoes rule, he preferred to wait outside..

Daha sonra Volubilis'e çok yakın olan Mevlay İdris kasabasına uğradık. Fas'daki ilk Arap - Müslüman hanedanlığı kuran Mevlay İdris 791 yılındaki ölümünden sonra, bugün adını taşıyan bu kente gömülmüş. Bugün Fas'lı Müslümanlar arasında önemli bir ziyaret yeri olan türbesine Müslüman olmayanların girmesi yasak. Ben kafama bir eşarp sarıp girsem de, ayakkabı çıkarmaya üşenen Sevgili kapıda bekledi..

Moroccan women love to decorate their hands and feet with henna. There are really some lovely pattens. At the main square of the town,there were some henna makers. On my previous trip 12 yeras ago I had one  on my shoulder which stayed close to a month, but this time I couldnt find time..

Fas'lı kadınlar ellerini ve ayaklarını kına ile süslemeyi çok seviyorlar. Türbe'nin çıkışında da kına uygulayan bir kaç kadın vardı. 12 yıl önceki Fas seyahatimde ben de omuzuma yaptırmıştım ve yaklaşık bir ay kadar dayanmıştı. Bu sefer nedense bir türlü zaman bulamadım..

Later we ate some grilled meatballs at a small road side restaurant. They were just delicious. As it is customary in Morroccan meals, a plate of olives served before the meal..

Daha sonra yol kenarındaki ufak bir dükkanda son derece lezzetli ızgara köfteler yedik. Fas sofralarında adet olduğu üzere yemekten önce bir tabak çeşitli soslarla marine edilmiş zeytin de geldi..

Cold days..

Its really cold here, probably the coldest days we have experienced since we moved to Datca..Right now its actually +4 degrees  outside with a brialliant sunshine but when the wind blows its freezing  your bones. We are mostly spending the times inside enjoying the fireplace and lots of hot beverages...

Buralar gerçekten çok soğuk. Sanırım Datça'ya taşındığımızdan beri gördüğümüz en soğuk günler. Aslında şu anda dışarda pırıl pırıl bir güneş var ve sıcaklıkta 4 derece ama rüzgar estiği zaman, kemiklerinize kadar donuyorsunuz. Şu sıralar zamanımız genellikle evde, şömine keyfi yaparak ve bol bol sıcak içecek tüketerek geçiyor..

She lives, loves and shares her small island on her lovely blog and her new book My Greek Island Home. I found so many similarities of her life and mine in our small paradises..I really enjoyed her blog and hoping to read her book soon...

Winter flowers..

Except man made and cared gardens, I think summer is the lowest season for the plants around here. Most of them are usually dry or without any flowers. However all other seasons have their unique plants and flowers. Here are some bush like plant, I picked from our recent hike. They are everywhere near the forest. .With its bell shaped small pink flowers  it is a small miracle. As always,I dont know what they are named but I really love them...

 Eğer kendi yaptığımız ve baktığımız bahçeleri saymazsak sanırım buralarda yaz mevsimi bitkiler için en kötü zaman. Çoğu genellikle sapsarı kuruyor, ve çiçeklerini başka mevsimlere saklıyorlar..Buna karşın diğer her mevsimin kendini has bitkileri ve çiçekleri var. Bu çalı benzeri bitkiyi geçen gün yaptığımız yürüyüş sırasında kopardım. Minik pembe çiçekleri ile adeta bir mucize ve şu sıralar orman kenarında bol bol bulunuyor. Her zaman olduğu gibi adı nedir bilmiyorum ama çok güzeller....
