Taroudant - Morocco

Before our travel, a friend gave us lots of travel magazine clippings, he collected about Morocco. In one of them writer Anthony Sattin was writing about Taroudant, capital city of the fertile Souss valley, 80 km away from the coastal town Agadir..

To tell you the truth, it was a very good piece. Although he explicitly told that there is not much to see, he sold it to us. The title of his article was ''In search of the real deal''. So we took the necessary extra 200 km to find the real deal.

Taroudant is called ''little Marrakech'' because of its rich history and miles of red earth walls just like her bigger sister. But as Mr Anthony said there is really not much to see. We took a walk in its two souks and as all souks in Morocco they were really lively. The Berber souk with its exotic name was full of cheap Chinese imports. Arab souk was offering local Moroccan art and goods in much cheaper prices than Marrakech.

For lunch we chosed the best looking place in the main square. As it wasnt looking very promising we ordered a simple omelette, thinking that an omelette is an omelette everywhere. Big mistake..The owner brought us a tajin omelette. There was more oil in it tahn the egg particles and what's more, we had to fight we hundreds of flies for our lunch. It wasnt a very good experience with an empty stomach.

To tell you the truth if you asked me on that day, I would strongly advise you not to Taroudant, but after coming home and getting some rest and digest the trip and the experince, I am glad that we went and see a Moroccan town not invaded by tourists..

As a side note, if you have lots of money, you could stay at La Gazelle d'Or, one of the most expensive hotels at North Africa and I bet you would have a totally different experience of the city like the regulars of the hotel  which includes French presidents, rock stars and Farah Pahlavi, the exiled empres of İran..
